Virginia Nursing License

Spanning from the Chesapeake Bay to the Appalachian Mountains, with its expansive Atlantic coastline, Virginia is a beauty of the Southeastern U.S. “The Old Dominion State” holds the honor as one of the 13 original colonies, and it features a rich history and is home to a variety of significant landmarks in our nation’s legacy.

From the bigger cities of Richmond and Virginia Beach, to the quieter towns away from the noise, travel nurses taking an assignment in Virginia will find that there is plenty to see and do. Day trips can be made to Mt. Vernon to see the home of George Washington or to Monticello, to experience life where Thomas Jefferson grew up.

For the non-history buffs, there is outdoor adventure to be found in Shenandoah National Park and the Colonial National Historical Park. The state slogan of “Virginia is for Lovers” holds true for travel nurses, and we think there is plenty to love about this state!

If you already hold an active RN license in another state, you are eligible to apply for a Virginia Nursing License by Endorsement.

To apply for endorsement you will need:

  • A fingerprint-based criminal background check (CBC).
  • To request license verification from your original state of licensure (state where you took the NCLEX). if your original state of licensure participates in the Nursys license verification system, go to: Nursys to request the verification of licensure ($30 fee).

Is Virginia a Compact Nursing State?

Yes! Virginia is proud to be a member of the Enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC), which allows nurses living in compact states to practice in all other compact states with a single multi-state license. If your primary state of residence is a compact state, you must apply for licensure in that state.

In accordance with Virginia law (Virginia Code §54.1-3040.3 (C):) If you meet all Uniform Licensure Requirements (ULRs) and your primary state of residence in Virginia, you will be granted a license with multi-state privilege which allows you to practice in other compact states.
