Chances are if you are currently in nursing school or recently graduated, you are curious about student loan forgiveness for nurses. Education costs are rising each year, and many people are left struggling with how to make begin repayment.

NURSE Corps Loan Repayment Program

This student loan forgiveness for nurses offers loan forgiveness for up to 85 percent of your unpaid loans. The following requirements must be in place to certify:

  • License as a registered nurse
  • License as an advanced practice registered nurse, such as a nurse practitioner; or nurse faculty member with qualifying nursing debt
  • Degree from an accredited school of nursing located in a U.S. state or territory
  • Employment in an eligible Critical Shortage Facility in a high need area (for RNs, APNs)
  • Or employment at an accredited school of nursing (for nurse faculty)

In return for your loan being forgiven, you will agree to work for a two-year period at a qualifying facility in an under-served area.

Federal Loan Forgiveness

Depending on what type of loan you have, you may qualify for nurse student loan forgiveness. If you have a Federal Perkins Loan and are currently working full-time as a registered nurse, you may qualify for up to 100 percent nurse student loan forgiveness.

Make sure to read all the information and correctly fill out all necessary paperwork. Continue making payments on your loan until you receive word from your loan service provider.

State Resources

Check with your state to see if they offer any student loan forgiveness for nurses. Due to the nationwide nursing shortage, many states have implemented programs to help attract quality nurses. Florida has a program that is designed for full-time nurses and many other states have followed suit.

If you do choose to apply for nurse student loan forgiveness, thoroughly read all the details and understand what you are committing to. Some programs require at least two years of work, and that could mean moving to another location.
