Vermont Nursing License

As part of the New England region, the state of Vermont features plenty of charm, history and gorgeous natural landscapes that the East is known for.

From hiking trails and skiing slopes--to its over 100 covered bridges--Vermont certainly isn’t lacking with things to do. During the fall months, travel nurses can enjoy the spectacular colors of changing leaves that are unique to “The Green Mountain State.”

In addition to the beautiful scenery that encompasses the state of Vermont, travel nurses will find there are also plenty of opportunities to bring their careers here. But it all starts with obtaining your Vermont nursing license.

Get Your Nursing License in Vermont

If you are ready to take a travel nursing assignment in Vermont, the first thing you will need to do is pay a visit to the Vermont Secretary of State - Office of Professional Regulations nursing website to obtain some critical information. Using their online services portal, you can apply, renew, update an application/license, request verification, and more--all online.

To practice nursing in the state as an RN, you must get licensure by endorsement or examination.

According to the Secretary of State, to qualify to be licensed by endorsement, an RN applicant must be licensed or certified in good standing in another jurisdiction in which the standards and qualifications required for regulation in that jurisdiction are substantially equivalent to Vermont's and must have worked a minimum of 50 days (400 hours) in the last two years, or 120 days (960 hours) in the last 5 years under that license. Then, you complete your online application and pay the application fee of $150.00.

For licensure by examination, there are a few additional steps: (This process for new nurses who do not hold an active state license.)

  • Submit your online application and pay the application fee of $60.00.
  • Complete the verification of education form that must be submitted by your nursing school.
  • Register with Pearson VUE and pay the exam fee to take the NCLEX.

Vermont Nursing License Verification

For verification of licensure inquiries, Vermont utilizes Nursys for verification. This is part of the licensing process for endorsement.

For endorsement, once you submit your application and pay the fee, it is time to submit your verification of licensure. You will provide verification of your original nursing license as well as the nursing license from your most recent state of nursing employment. If those states are members of Nursys, go to the website and obtain license verification(s) for Vermont.

If your state(s) do not participate in electronic verification through Nursys, contact your Board of Nursing.

Vermont Nursing License Renewal

The renewal fee for a Vermont Nursing License is currently $95. Nurses will typically receive three courtesy notifications to the email on file when it is time to renew, and the renewal form can be completed and submitted online.

Vermont is Now a Compact State

Vermont is proud to be a member of the Nurse Licensure Compact (NLC). The NLC is a great resource for nurses because it allows them to practice in other states that are part of the compact. For more information on the compact and to view a list of the actively participating states, visit NCSBN.org.
