Get Your Utah Nursing License

The Utah Board of Nursing will have all of the information that you need to get on your way to practicing in Utah. New graduates will have a different process than RNs who already hold an active state license.

Applying for the NCLEX - Initial Licensure as a Nurse in Utah - 2 Step Process 1. Take and Pass the NCLEX 2. Apply for Licensure with the Utah Division of Occupational and Professional Licensing (DOPL)

Important things to keep in mind:

  • Apply for your license AFTER passing NCLEX and pay - $95.00 (online or manual form).
  • Complete your fingerprints at DOPL or at your local police department (mail to DOPL).
  • It can take 14 business days to issue a complete application.
  • You will see your license number on DOPL’s website the day after it’s active.
  • You will receive a hard copy of your license in the mail within 10 business days.

Nurses who already hold an active license must go through the verification and endorsement process.

Overview of the Endorsement process for a Utah nursing license:

  • Apply for your RN/LPN license online or by manual form and pay the $95.00 fee.
  • Complete your fingerprints at DOPL or at your local police department (mail to DOPL).
  • Verify at least one active license through Nursys. If the state you’re licensed in doesn’t participate in Nursys, contact that state nursing board and request a verification to be sent to DOPL.
  • Allow 14 business days to issue a completed application.

Renewing your Utah nursing license can also be completed totally online! RN Licenses expire on January 31 of odd years and the renewal fee is $58.

Utah has continuing education requirements that must be met in order to hold an active Utah license. According to the Board, “During the past 2 years, you must have completed licensed practice for at least 400 hours or licensed practice for at least 200 hours and completed 15 hours of approved continuing education or completed 30 hours of approved continuing education.”

Utah is a Compact State!

As of 2018, Utah is now a member of the enhanced Nurse Licensure Compact (eNLC). All nurses are required to meet, “Uniform Licensure Requirements (ULRs).”

The states that are part of the eNLC are not exactly the same as the original NLC. If you have an eNLC multistate license, you can only practice in those designated eNLC states.
