Indiana Nursing License

The Hoosier state is known for much more than its ample farmland and famous auto race. In fact, this Midwestern gem is also a great state for travel nurses due to its plethora of nursing opportunities in cities like Indianapolis, Bloomington, Lafayette, Dyer, and Fort Wayne, Indiana.

Whether you are looking to expand your nursing skills and experience to work in a major facility, or you are craving more of a small-town rural feel for your next travel nursing assignment you’ll need an Indiana nursing license to practice in the state.

How to Apply for an Indiana Nursing License?

Obtaining an Indiana Nursing license all starts by heading over to the Indiana State Board of Nursing.

There are two options:

Licensing by Endorsement is for RNs who already hold an active license in another state, and Examination is for new nurses who need to pass the NCLEX exam and apply for a new license. Additionally, the fee for both types of nurse license is $50.

Here are just a few of the documents you’ll need to have ready to begin the application process for an Indiana Nursing License:

  • Completed application
  • Signed passport photo
  • Proof of current license / the ability to verify Indiana Nursing License
  • Proof of licensure from every state ever licensed in
  • Transcript required for anyone with an original license in IL or FL

Need to Renew?

Renewing for an RN license can also be completed online. Registered nurse licenses expire on October 31st of odd-numbered years.

Guidelines for renewals:

  • A license that has been expired for less than 18 months may be renewed online via the portal.
  • Licenses that have been expired for 18 months will require a renewal form found online to begin the renewal process.

Is Indiana a Nursing Compact State?

There’s been big news for the state of Indiana and its status as a compact nursing license state. The Indiana State Board of Nursing and the Indiana Professional Licensing Agency began the process to implement the necessary procedures and policies to allow for Indiana to join the Nurse Licensure Compact as of July 1, 2019! Since this has all happened recently, the policies and procedures need to be fully enacted before a nurse can take advantage of the multi-state license in Indiana.

According to the ISBN (January 2020), the compact and its multi-state licensure provisions will not be effective until the implementation has been completed. In previous instances, a state joining the compact may require an implementation period of up to 12 months before full enactment.
